PROJECT DESCRIPTION
ARTIVISM: The Avant-garde, Between Militancy and Spectacle in Latin America is a virtual exhibition that presents four Latin American artworks from the 1960s to the present and explores the intersection of art and politics. Highlighting the concept of art as a tool for social change, the exhibition showcases artworks concerned with the widespread political repressions and social injustices in the region. The project argues that these artworks generate a moment of inflection, questioning the boundary between art and politics, political art, and political protest through spectacle, outside of art institutions. By examining this boundary through the manipulation of the sensitive (the aesthetic), artivism is produced, intervening in a space, creating a moment of analysis and conversation that helps forge new political and social contexts.
My main contribution to the project is the introduction and the analysis of LasTesis’s Un violador en tu camino, 2019-present. Additionally, I was the project manager and main web designer. This project provided a space for me to analyze the benefits of the virtual presentation of an exhibition. The virtual platform provides open access, breaking the geographical, monetary, and temporal barriers present in in-person exhibitions and reaching a global audience. Furthermore, it allows curators to select and combine temporary performances and installations that would otherwise be inaccessible in the same space at the same time.
The virtual exhibition was curated by Ana Barrera, Diana Blanco, Christian Herrera, and Abraham Jurado for the class "The Art of Revolution and the Politics of Art in Latin America" taught by Professor Greg Cohen, UCLA Department of Spanish and Portuguese in Fall 2020.
